Eating Disorder Story: Anything Is Better Than The Existence You Are Living Now


You sit on the hard orange chairs, the cold plastic rubbing painfully against the bones that protrude from the base of your spine. Normal people don’t have those bones sticking out, but you, the college freshman home for the summer, do have those two little knobs poking out at obtuse angles from your back. You look down at your thin tan legs, and see the creases your thighs and calves make when you sit criss cross, one boney limb draped over the other.

You think you need to get rid of that fat, have clean lines, no folds or dimply cellulite lining your legs.

You’re only 19 years old, 19 year old women shouldn’t have fat on their bodies. They are long and lean with an effervescent beauty that screams

LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME

The nurse calls your name, and you quickly glance up to her troubled eyes. As you stand she quickly looks you up and down, averting her gaze to your veined arms and hollowed cheekbones. You follow her down the sterile white hallway to a small examination room where she asks you to remove your clothes and put on a creased paper gown.

You were told by your pediatrician—yes, even at the age of 19 you still see a pediatrician—to immediately go to the hospital after he saw you two days ago for a checkup. With a frightened look, he explained that you might collapse at any moment, that the months of running and weight lifting and bicycling and swimming on 200 calories a day has weakened your heart so much that you could go into cardiac arrest at any moment, that people have just fainted and died

a whirl of threats and fear tide pooled in your mind

You don’t really know if you believe that you could have a heart attack—you just completed your first year of college, and no one this young has heart attacks—but you do know that you are tired. Your eyes are tired from studying late at night, your legs are heavy pieces of lead from the miles you ran around the school campus, your arms are too weak to open doors to the music classrooms. Your head hurts and even though it’s only 10 in the morning, you want to lie down in bed and sleep until the next day.

Your mother cried that summer afternoon you returned home from college. You knew you had lost some weight, but didn’t think it was too much—yes, you had to roll the waistband of your shorts one, two, three folds, otherwise they would fall around your ankles—but you could still pinch some skin around your stomach, and you still had the fat creases around your knees when you sat. At first you thought your mother cried because she was so happy to see you, the magnificent musician, intelligent hardworking student returning home from her first year at a renowned music college. Then she told you that when you walked out from the gateway, she didn’t even recognize the 78 pound girl wearing fleece in the middle of May. She didn’t know that that girl was supposed to be her daughter. You remember her tight grip of her hug as she finally realized it was you

Mom, it’s me, I’m right here, you cried

and then the look of shock and fear in her eyes as she pulled away from you. Your heart ached at that look.

A knock on the examination room jars your thoughts and a kindly middle aged man in a starched white coat enters the room. He explains in a calm, monotone voice the battery of tests that will be run on you

blood tests

an EKG

electrolyte checks

potassium level assessments

you don’t know what they all mean, but you nod your head in agreement as he goes over the list. The doctor then makes you do simple acts, stand on one leg, he says, close your eyes and touch your nose, walk in a straight line with your feet touching heel to toe heel to toe. You don’t understand why you have to perform such trivial and elementary tasks, but you do it, and as you do he jots notes down on his paper pad.

You sit back down on the examination bed, and watch with an intensely growing fear of dread as the doctor slowly shakes his head at his notes. He looks up at you with the same shock and fear your mother’s eyes held that day you stepped off the plane, and slowly explains that he will have to consult with the head administrator, but you may have to be admitted to the hospital

RIGHT AWAY. NOW. AT THIS MOMENT.

At the sound of the work “hospital”, your heart drops into your stomach like how it does on your favorite roller coaster rides, and you picture yourself

with needles sticking out of your right forearm, saline solution pumping through your dehydrated veins

your tiny body tucked under rough white sheets

your mother sitting on the straight backed hospital chair, tears slowly dripping down her cheeks

your father with downcast eyes, folding his fingers, intertwining them into a white knuckled grip

The doctor leaves the brightly lit examination room to walk down the corridor to the administration office, and as his footsteps grow fainter and fainter you feel a welling of strength burning inside of you, building up from the bottoms of your feet, pulsating to your chest and heart, radiating up to your mind your thoughts.

You avert your gaze down to your legs and for the first time notice how your knobby knees form round bumps and are surprised that you can actually see the individual muscle fibers in your calf. You look back up to the white walls around you and know

Even if you are admitted to the hospital

Even if you are fed three meals and three snacks a day

Even if your legs are dimpled with cellulite

ANYTHING ANYTHING ANYTHING

Is better than the existence you are living in now.

Dear Eating Disorder; Take This Job and Shove...

Dear Eating Disorder,

In the best interest of myself and my future, I hereby submit to you my resignation. An opportunity to work for Recovery has been presented to me that I cannot afford to let pass me by. Though this new venture will be difficult I am up for the challenge and more than qualified for the position. Please be advised that I will not be submitting the customary two weeks notice as my new position requires that I start immediately.

I did not expect to be leaving you on such short notice but, as you are well aware, the conditions in which I have been expected to work have been deplorable, inhumane, and are no longer acceptable. The strict regulations and practices required by your company have proven detrimental to my health and well-being. In contrast, Recovery has offered me a benefit package that you are unable to, and which is unsurpassed.

I will be leaving behind the doubts, insecurities, and secrecy so generously supplied to me throughout my stay here as Recovery will be guiding me to the materials I need or supplying me with the resources in which to obtain them.

What Is An Eating Disorder? The Signs, Symptoms, & Red Flags


What is an eating disorder?

Function: noun
: any of several psychological disorders (as anorexia nervosa or bulimia) characterized by serious disturbances of eating behavior

Eating disorders involve extreme behaviors, attitudes, and feelings surrounding food, weight, and body image which are harmful to a person's health and well-being.

Eating disorders are dangerous and can be fatal.

Though someone may be suffering from one eating disorder, they may also exhibit behaviors /traits of other eating disorders (or trade one eating disorder for another).

Below are some of the signs, symptoms, and red flags:

Anorexia
  • refusal to eat
  • intense fear of gaining weight
  • distorted or negative self-image
  • low blood pressure
  • dry skin
  • lanugo (soft, downy hair covering the body)
  • sensitivity to cold
  • fainting/dizziness
  • irregular heart rhythm

International No Diet Day May 6th, 2010: Get The Facts



We have Mary Evans Young to thank for International No Diet Day. A recovered anorexic and director of the British anti-diet campaign, Diet Breakers, Mary Evans Young established INDD (International No Diet Day) in 1992 to raise awareness of eating disorders and combat the diet industry.

Mary Evans Young explains:
"I started INDD in the spring of '92 following two things. The first was seeing a television programme where women were having their stomachs stapled. One woman had split the staples and was in for her third op[eration]. And then a young girl of 15 committed suicide because 'she couldn't cope being fat.' She was size 14 (12 in US). I decided somebody had to stand up and try to stop this bloody madness and in the absence of anybody else, I decided it would be me. So I sent out a press release titled 'Fat Woman Bites Back'...and got some media attention. I was desperate to keep the anti-diet/size acceptance concept in the public eye. So, without really thinking about it, at the end of a live TV interview I said, 'Don't forget to celebrate No Diet Day.' ...Having declared it on prime time national TV I then set about organising a picnic in Hyde Park. Alas it rained, so we adjourned to my living room instead."

Dieting often leads to unhealthy and dangerous attitudes towards food. Restriction, being the nature of dieting, places negative values on certain foods such as too many calories, too much fat, etc. The tension and stress of struggling over our food choices puts food in the position of enemy. A child/teen exposed to these attitudes in a dieting parent, sibling, or friend has an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Anorexia and Orthorexia are two eating disorders to commonly result from dieting.


Some Interesting Stats

Women and Men:

  • The average American woman is 5’4" tall and weighs 140 pounds.
  • The average American model is 5’11" tall and weighs 117 pounds.
  • 91% of college aged women have dieted in an attempt to control their weight
  • 25% of American men are on a diet on any given day
  • 40-50%% of American women are on a diet on any given day

Children:

  • 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner
  • 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat Over 50% of 10 year old girls wish they were thinner
  • 51% of 9 -10 year-old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet
  • 46% of 9-11 year-olds (and 82% of their families) are sometimes/very often on diets
  • 90% of female high school juniors & seniors women diet regularly though 10%-15% are over the weight recommended by the standard height-weight charts

Overall:
  • 95% of all dieters will regain the weight they lost in 1-5 years
  • 35% of dieters will progress to pathological dieting.
  • 20%-25% pathological dieters will progress to partial or full-syndrome eating disorders
  • Those who diet moderately are 5 times more likely to develop eating disorders than non-dieters
  • Those who diet severely are 18 times more likely to develop and eating disorder
  • 1% of teenage girls & 5% of college-age women become anorexic or bulimic
  • Between 90% and 99% of reducing diets fail to produce permanent weight loss
  • 15 percent of young women in the US who are not diagnosed with an eating disorder exhibit substantially disordered eating behavior and attitude
  • 8 million people in the US suffer from an eating disorder
  • In your lifetime 50,000 people will die as a direct result of their Eating Disorder
  • The current media ideal of thinness is achieved by less than 5% of the female population
  • Americans spend more than $40 billion dollars a year on dieting and diet-related products (That’s roughly equivalent to the amount the U.S. Federal Government spends on education each year)
  • Quick-weight-loss schemes are among the most common consumer frauds
  • Diet programs have the highest customer dissatisfaction of any service industry
  • Girls develop eating and self-image problems before drug or alcohol problems
  • Drug and alcohol programs are in almost every school, but no eating disorder programs
  • A recent survey: only 30% out of 250 randomly chosen women 21-35 years of age had normal bone mass. It was concluded that women are so afraid of gaining weight from eating dairy products

Children's Mental Health Statistics and Information



Statistics:

Serious emotional disturbances affect 1 in 10 young people.

The onset of major mental illness may occur as early as 7 to 11 years of age.

Estimated: between 118,700 and 186,600 youths in the juvenile justice system have at least one mental disorder.

73% of children in juvenile detention facilities reported having mental health problems with 57% reporting having had prior mental health treatment/hospitalization.

21% of low-income children and youth ages 6 -17 have mental health problems.

Approximately 5% of children were prescribed medication for emotional and behavioral difficulties. Approximately 89% of the %5 were prescribed medication for hyperactivity, concentration, or impulsivity difficulties.

Approximately 2.9 million children (5.1%) were prescribed medication for emotional or behavioral difficulties.

Approximately5.3% (2.9 million) children received treatment for emotional or behavioral difficulties in addition to, or other than, medication.

Approximately 2/3 of all young people with mental health problems do not get the help they need.

Approximately 79% of children with a mental disorder, between the ages of 6 -17 receive no mental health care.

Approximately 20% (1 in 5) of children/adolescents may have a diagnosable mental disorder.

Children with mental disorders are estimated to range from 7.7 million to 12.8 million.

High school students with mental health problems are more likely to fail or drop out of school.

Up to 14% of high school students with mental health problems receive grades consisting of mostly Ds & Fs compared to 7% of children with disabilities.

Approximately 30%-40% of children with ADHD have family member(s)/relatives with ADHD.

ADHD is the most common psychiatric condition for children, affecting approximately 5%-10%.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Day 2010


Thursday, May 6th, is the fifth annual National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.

Serious emotional and mental health disorders in children are treatable. Treatment is essential to a child's overall health and well-being. Children and their families should not have to face these challenges with shame but with dignity, support, understanding, and acceptance.


The goal of Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is to promote positive mental health from birth to adulthood:
  • to raise awareness of effective programs for children's mental health needs
  • to demonstrate how children's mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience
  • to show how children with mental health needs thrive in their communities.

SAMHSA explains:

The overall message of Awareness Day is that children and youth with mental health needs and their families can thrive if provided with the services and supports they need. Children's mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, prevention, recovery, and resilience for children and youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families. It is a goal of children's mental health initiatives to transform the mental health service delivery system for children and youth with mental health needs and their families. In 2010, Awareness Day will mark its 5th anniversary, as well as a first-time focus at the national level on the topic of early childhood. The key message for 2010 is that "positive mental health is essential to a child's healthy development from birth."

By shining a spotlight on early childhood, Awareness Day efforts will encourage the following actions:

  • Integrate mental health into every environment that impacts child development from birth
  • Nurture the social and emotional well-being of children from birth
  • Look for and discuss milestones of a child's social and emotional development from birth

Bill Aids Eating Disorder Care

An act propelled by two Minnesota senators seeks to improve the plight of those suffering from eating disorders and prevent future cases from starting.

The Freed Act would allocate research money to the National Institutes of Health to better investigate the causes of eating disorders and improve treatment methods. The research would also seek to improve public data on eating disorders, including morbidity and mortality rates.

The act was sponsored Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and recently introduced by Sens. Amy Klobuchar D-Minn., and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

“The fact is, we don’t know nearly enough about diagnosing, treating and preventing these diseases,” Franken wrote in a statement. “Today’s legislation is a major step forward in understanding eating disorders and how to stop them from destroying lives.”

When patients with less obvious eating disorders visit their doctors, it’s not uncommon for them to hear lines like “You look great, I wish all my patients looked like you,” said Jeanine Cogan, policy director of the Eating Disorders Coalition.

A Better Body Image

Can you feel the excitement in the air as school-age kids enter the summer months? Free of their tight schedule and normal routine, warm weather offers kids plenty of opportunities for fun in the sun and time with friends. Unfortunately, the same activities that kids enjoy so much can also cause anxiety about their appearance.For teens, tweens and even elementary-age children, physical appearance is a top concern. If parents start early and are consistent with positive body-image messages, children will be better able to avoid disordered eating patterns down the line.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, a 1991 study found that 42 percent of first- through third-grade girls would like to be thinner. Another study that same year determined that 81 percent of 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat. Statistics like these suggest that a cultural bias toward thinness is leading our youth to value a particular size at a very young age. Parental guidance is more important than ever.

Why do kids care?

It seems as if childhood concerns regarding weight and appearance start earlier and earlier.

“I think the struggles affect kids at a much younger age,” says Kathy Kater, LICSW, psychotherapist and author of “Healthy Body Image: Teaching Kids to Eat and Love Their Bodies Too!”

Fairmount Performing Arts Center play examines baffling world of food and body image

Amy is a teen who is happy to bake her dad his favorite chocolate cake for his birthday, but doesn't trust herself to eat one bite. Instead, she heads to her bedroom and madly runs in place to burn the calories she consumed at the family dinner.

Fortysomething "Calorie Woman" can spout off the number of calories in the most complicated "grande" coffee drink at Starbucks -- though she only orders the nonfat, sugar-free version, and panics when she tastes whole-milk foam added by mistake.

Portland's Zoe Yates Tells Of Battle Back From Anorexia

A TEENAGER who fought against anorexia is warning others of the dangers posed by eating disorders.

Zoe Yates, from Portland, spent five years battling anorexia and ended up being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Her weight plummeted to under five stone as she refused to eat and spent prolonged periods in hospital.

Zoe, 19, is now well on her way to recovery and has used her savings to book an eight-week adventure in Southern India. She will be traveling with a friend who she met in hospital and together they will be going to volunteer in an orphanage.

Way To Go! Rebecca Allen Of Roslyn High School

Rebecca Allen knows firsthand about the dangers of eating disorders.

Allen, a Roslyn High School senior, was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa in 2006, and missed the start of her freshman year because she was admitted to Schneider Children's Hospital. Since then, Allen initiated the idea for Project HEAL, a nonprofit that gives funding to people battling eating disorders who can't afford treatment, which can be $30,000 a month, she said. So far, she's raised some $100,000.

"Insurance rarely covers eating disorders," Allen, 17, said. "I saw people firsthand being turned down for treatment."

HBS Fashionably Fights Eating Disorders

April is the month for fashion shows with a cause, it seems, and on April 13, the Harvard Business School’s Retail and Apparel Club hosted its 7th annual HBS fashion show at Mantra, a restaurant in downtown Boston. Every year, the fashion show aims to raise awareness for a selected charity “through the lens of fashion,” according to a press kit for the fashion show.

This year, the students celebrated beautiful people, beautiful clothes, and beautiful bodies in an effort to raise awareness for this year’s charity, the Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital.

German school takes teenagers to see cremations of young people to warn them of the dangers of addiction

A German town has begun taking teenagers to witness cremations of young people killed through drink or drugs in a bid to wean them from a life of addictions.

Children aged between 14 and 16 in Meissen now have to go at least once to the town crematorium to see the coffins of young victims burned in the 920 degree oven.

They are also shown the ashes, a machine which grinds bones to dust and the remains of false teeth that melt into unidentifiable bits of metal in the flames.

The shock-therapy, a new concept in Germany which normally does its best to shield children from the grim realities of the adult world, is being observed by other cities and towns with a view to copying it.

This week 40 youngsters from the Ebersbacher Middle School in the town stood in the chilly cool room of the crematorium among 200 corpses awaiting cremation.
